Liontown celebrates NAIDOC Week

17/07/2024

From 7-14 July, Liontown marked NAIDOC Week, at our Kathleen Valley site and our Perth office, with a jam-packed program that celebrated the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At our head office in Perth, the team enjoyed a bushtucker-inspired morning tea and were invited to watch a short film called Marlu Man by Indigenous director Zac James.

At Kathleen Valley, the team experienced traditional Indigenous delicacies on offer at the Dragonfly Village dining room throughout the week and participated in Rob Binsiar’s highly acclaimed Cultural Heritage Training.

The week ended with a fun and inspiring event that featured learning how to prep damper and dig for honey ants. The team feasted on Marlu (kangaroo) cooked on an open fire, discovered art and bush medicine and rocked out to the band, Desert Road. There was so much activity for everyone to join in and be a part of.

Alongside our in-house activities, Liontown supported the Wiluna Remote Community School’s NAIDOC celebrations. Liontown Heritage and Community Lead Jeremy Neesham attended the school’s two-day event, spending time connecting with children and playing in the community vs school football match. We donated fruit to the event and used paint and painting supplies to the school for a project to decorate a sea container.

Thank you to all the people who shared their creativity, culture, history and knowledge with us. We learnt so much, tasted new foods and had a great time along the way.
