Meet Chelsea, ESG Graduate

10/09/2024

Chelsea Rushton has always been passionate about sustainability. With a Bachelor of Sustainability and Environmental Science, she began her mining career as a process operator at neighbouring companies in the Northern Goldfields. She gained a wide range of hands-on experiences in these roles, including starting up a gold mill as the control room operator.

Chelsea’s journey with Liontown began when she interviewed for a process operator position.

“I was offered the job, but I ultimately turned it down to take an environmental scientist role at another company, as I wanted to pursue a career in that direction.”

The Recruitment team at Liontown knew we had found someone we didn’t want to let slip by us. With her knowledge of and passion for sustainability and extensive processing experience, Chelsea was the perfect match for us and we created a role for her in the ESG team. Chelsea couldn’t say no. “I am so grateful to them for that and to everyone who backed me for it and has continued to back me since,” she said.

Chelsea’s role at Liontown is unique, combining both corporate and site responsibilities. Her days are varied, and she loves the mix of work. In her corporate role, she collaborates with other ESG team members on projects such as mine proposals, water licensing applications, reporting, and management plans. On site, Chelsea spends a lot of her time in the field, taking water samples, conducting work area inspections, monitoring wildlife and pulling weeds. The overlapping nature of her work allows her to move between corporate and site duties seamlessly, and she steps up into the advisor position when required.

Recently, Chelsea has been planning an environment summit at Kathleen Valley, which will bring together over 12 environmental professionals from five mine sites and four companies in the region. She has also been involved in developing a bird and bat management plan at Liontown’s wind farm. Working alongside her colleagues, she has learned to identify bat species, designed and implemented on-site monitoring and put together documentation for best practices.

What Chelsea loves most about Liontown is the supportive and welcoming culture. “There is no end to the fun in ESG. Clair and the team are so supportive of everyone proposing new ideas and different ways of doing things,” Chelsea said. Whether she’s with the site team or the corporate team, she feels encouraged to ask questions and learn from everyone around her. “I also love the fast pace of Liontown. You never know what you’re walking into from week to week. There is no such thing as a quiet week,” Chelsea added.

Chelsea is always ready to jump into any opportunity that comes her way at Liontown. Her adaptability and willingness to embrace new challenges make her an invaluable asset to the team. Her positive attitude and strong work ethic are infectious to those around her and help us to achieve the best outcomes each day as we power a sustainable future, generating value and opportunity for our stakeholders.
